How to Grow and Propagate Succulents
My all-time favorite plants are succulents, I love how many varieties of succulents they are! Succulents are a family of plants that mainly store their water in their leaves, which means that they don't require as much watering. Many cacti are succulents, they come in many shapes and sizes. Succulents are hardy plants and require little care, they are awesome houseplants!
Here are my houseplant tips on how to keep your succulents happy:
Choosing the Plant - Make sure you purchase your succulent at a nursery since they have become very popular you want to choose a healthy specimen. Look for ones that have plump leaves and show new growth.
Soil - Choose a cactus soil mix, succulents don't like wet or humid soil.
Planter - Your succulent planter must have drainage holes, succulents thrive best when they can breathe well.
Sun - Succulents are very finicky when it comes to how much sun they want. They prefer as much sun as possible, place them by a bright south-facing window for maximum light.
Bloom - Some succulents and cacti often flower during their growing seasons, make sure to give them maximum light for flowering.
Propagation - Simply nudge the little leaves back and forth to remove them. Allow the leaves to callus over to avoid rotting when planting, this usually takes 2-3 days. Place them in a plastic container with air holes or simply place them on the soil. Spray the soil lightly with water, and respray whenever the soil is too dry. Place little babies in indirect sunlight and watch them grow! Replant them once the leaves have shriveled up and you're left with a mini succulent. This can take up to 2-3 months depending on your climate, be patient!
Happy Growing!
