Why Duck Is the Perfect Alternative to Turkey for Thanksgiving (and My Fool-Proof Recipe!)

Roasted Duck Recipe

Thanksgiving is often synonymous with turkey, but for those of us who celebrate in smaller gatherings or prefer something a little different, duck is an excellent alternative. It’s easier to prepare, smaller in size, and with the right recipe, can be just as satisfying as any holiday turkey. If you’re like us, celebrating together and wanting a no-fuss meal, I’ve got a simple, fool-proof roast duck recipe that’s packed with flavor—and it’s a lot easier than you might think!

Why Choose Duck Over Turkey?

For smaller gatherings, a turkey can feel a bit excessive. Duck, on the other hand, is the perfect size—smaller, more manageable, and full of flavor. Not only does duck offer rich, juicy meat, but it’s also less time-consuming to prepare. You can still get that festive, holiday feeling without having to deal with hours of basting and babysitting a massive bird.

My Fool-Proof Roast Duck Recipe

This recipe gives you all the flavor of traditional Chinese-style duck without the hassle. With just a few ingredients and simple steps, you’ll have a delicious, juicy duck that will leave everyone at the table impressed.

BBQ Roast Duck

Serves 2-3 depending on size of the duck   Total baking time: 2hrs

Ingredients

  • 1 whole duck, about 4-5 pounds
  • 2 tablespoons BBQ sauce
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1 lemon or orange (for stuffing)
  • plum sauce for serving
  • freshly cooked rice for serving
  • cotton string for tying legs together
  • two small pieces of aluminum foil

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Wash and clean the duck thoroughly, inside and out. Pat it dry with paper towels.
  3. Season the inside of the duck with a pinch of salt and pepper, then place the whole lemon or orange inside the cavity. This will keep the duck moist and add a hint of citrus flavor. Tie legs together with string.
  4. In a small bowl, mix the BBQ sauce and hoisin sauce together. Brush the sauce mix all over the duck, making sure to cover it evenly.
  5.  Place the duck in a roasting pan, breast-side up. Wrap wing tips with aluminum foil so they don't burn too much. (Don't worry about the aluminum, we won't be serving the wing tips)
  6. Roast for 2 hours, or until internal temperature reaches 165°F basting occasionally with the juices that collect in the pan. After 2 hours, the skin will be crispy, and the meat will be perfectly juicy and flavorful.
  7. Let the duck rest for 10-15 minutes before carving and serving.
  8. Enjoy with fresh rice or vermicelli noodles, best served with plum sauce.

The Perfect Flavor Combination

What I love about this recipe is how the BBQ sauce and hoisin sauce work together to create a sweet and savory glaze, giving the duck a traditional Chinese BBQ flavor without all the extra steps. The lemon or orange inside keeps the duck juicy as it cooks, while also adding a bright, citrusy note to balance the richness of the meat.

Why You’ll Love It

- Smaller, More Manageable Size: Duck is perfect for smaller gatherings, unlike a giant turkey.

- No-Fuss Recipe: With minimal ingredients and just two hours in the oven, you don’t have to worry about spending all day in the kitchen.

- Familiar Flavors: The BBQ-hoisin glaze gives the duck a Chinese-style flavor that we love, with none of the hassle of more complex recipes.

- Juicy and Flavorful: The citrus inside keeps the duck moist, while the glaze crisps up the skin to perfection.

So, if you're looking to simplify your Thanksgiving but still want a meal that feels special and flavorful, give duck a try this year! My fool-proof roast duck recipe is sure to become a holiday favorite, and once you see how easy it is to make, you might never go back to turkey again.

Enjoy!
