Essential Travel Tip for Female Travellers

So what bathroom/feminine products should you bring to Asia? Asia's bathroom etiquette is a bit different than what I'm used to in Canada. Even though I've traveled to countries like Vietnam and Thailand many times, it's always a surprise reminder when I land at an Asian airport and need to visit the restroom. In Indonesia, toilet paper was outside the stall by the mirrors, and there wasn't any inside the stalls. That's because most Southeast Asian countries' plumbing doesn't support the use of toilet paper. It's more widely accepted to use bidets to clean yourself. Thus, as a female traveler with needs, I always bring extra napkin packets, doggie bags, and wipes. I never know where I'll be caught with my time of the month visiting, so here are some things I've learned while traveling Asia for over six months with regards to periods, tampons, and other things in between to help you avoid any mishaps.

Don't be surprised if you're expected to pay a few dollars to use the bathroom, even though most bathrooms are free. In Vietnam, I found businesses were more open to you using the bathroom when you purchased an item, even a bottle of water or snack would work. In many Southeast Asian countries, there were always washroom attendants. It's also nice if you tip the washroom attendant, or thank them as you leave.

Sometimes it’s hard to know what feminine products you should pack for your trip to Asia. In North America and Europe, it is easy to find all types of feminine products but in Asia, it is difficult to find tampons! Did you know that tampons are not widely accepted in Asia, and are not carried in most grocery stores/pharmacies?

If you’re planning on hiking or beaching or are an avid tampon user I would suggest adding tampons to your packing list. The diva cup is a good secondary option but most public washrooms have many stalls and shared sinks, which makes it a bit awkward when you need to wash up. I found it super helpful to bring a roll of doggie bags for disposing of feminine products on the go, sometimes bathrooms don't have a garbage disposal or you're in the jungle hiking and need to take your stuff with you. (Leave just footprints.)

It is also essential to bring your own pack of tissues, I suggest packing the flat rectangular tissue pack as they fit well anywhere, you can also purchase them at grocery/convenience stores in Asia. In most South Asian countries you cannot flush toilet paper or tampons, everything goes into the garbage. Most toilets will have a bidet or toilet gun, which you can use first and finish with some toilet paper. I was surprised when visiting some public malls in Indonesia that did not have any toilet paper in the stalls, they were next to the sink outside the stall. You are expected to take some into the stall with you. Public bathrooms are usually well maintained, but sometimes they run out of toilet paper so be sure to pack or grab some tissues for your trip to Asia.

Pads and tissues can be purchased at any grocery store so you don’t have to worry. Try the cooling pads if you’re looking for something unique. They give you a little tingle, promising freshness and cooling for your downstairs. I’m not sure if I like them but it’s interesting.

You don’t have to pack shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, moisturizer, or any other makeup item if you’re low on space or can’t afford to go overweight. In Asia, you can find most major brands like Nivea, Dove, Pantene, and Head and Shoulders - Even more expensive brands are available if you visit the mall. You can find all major makeup brands at the mall - or the local beauty shops. I’ve been excited to try the other makeup brands exclusively available in Asia. You will also often find Korean brands in stores as Korea has been known for their beauty standards and quality.

Exploring Asia’s beauty stores can be intimidating but the staff are helpful and can provide recommendations for your needs. Most items will also have an English description so don’t worry about navigating the aisles. Have fun and try something new!

I hope these tips help you prepare for your trip. Don't worry if you forget something, traveling reminds us how we can survive and be happy with very little. Remember to have fun and take it easy!

Happy and safe travels!
