Did you know Vietnam has winter too? North Vietnam shares the same winter in December- February as everywhere else, the temperature drops from the high 30s-40s degrees to low 10-20 degrees, sometimes even dropping to 2-3 degrees. The first time I went to Vietnam with my husband in March, we were surprised to wake up one morning to chills, the spring weather was colder than we had expected. We didn't pack any warm clothes, luckily a store(someone's home), where a lady was selling North Face jackets and vests was just around the corner.
I got a lightly-lined windbreaker and my husband got a down vest. They both came in handy when we were on a 7-hour overnight train car from Dalat to Ho Chi Minh City, where our cabin's A/C was stuck on and we had to hold each other to keep warm in our "North Face" gear.
Pack a windbreaker, warm sweater, or jacket, they also come in handy when you're out in the countryside and taking the motorbike out for a joyride. The winds and sun can be too much without a jacket even with the heat and humidity.
It's unexpected but most Vietnamese people prefer to cover up completely when driving on motorbikes. Women commonly cover their entire body, they also wear gloves and face masks to protect them from the sun and pollution. Don't forget to protect yourself from the sun with UV-protected clothing, sunglasses, and a hat, don't be shy to put on a mask in the big cities to protect yourself from the smog.
When looking for outerwear, consider a lightweight lined jacket, that's also water-repellent for rainy days and can keep you warm for those colder evenings. The weather in Vietnam can be unpredictable, the winters in the north can be cold, while it's still hot in the south, the rainy seasons are extra wet and the hot seasons are extra humid. Pack versatile pieces that don't take up too much space and have technical benefits. You never know what you'll be up against, it's always better to pack light but still be prepared.
Here are some of my suggestions for packable travel jackets if you're looking for something functional and cute on your next trip to Asia! I recommend Lole pieces for travel because many of their items have technical properties like quick dry and UV protection, which is helpful when you're traveling to a wet and humid climate.
