How to Keep Your Dog Clean Snowy Winter Dog Grooming Tips

Having a white mini poodle is absolutely wonderful, except during the snowy winters. It takes extra care to maintain his beautiful white hair and happy demeanor. I've learned that keeping him clean goes a long way to keep him happy and playful during this long season. Winter can be a terrible mess for both you and your best furry friend. Here are a few grooming tips to keep your dog happy and clean this wet winter season:

Grooming - You may want to change your dog's hairstyle during winter. Wally,  my mini poodle generally has the full poodle hair cut with puffs around his paws but during winter we ask the groomer to keep them very short and clean. This really helps keep him clean during walks and throughout the wet season.

Keep your dog looking fresh - It's great to have your own grooming set so you can update their hair anytime.

Wash their paws after the walk - The sidewalks are full of salt, make sure to give their paws a rinse after the walk. Simply pop your dog in the tub, lather their paws with mild soap and rinse with warm water. I towel dry my mini poodle's paws but you want to make sure they are fairly dry or else your dog will get very cold!

Groom his face and ears regularly - It's good to get into a habit of washing and brushing your dog's teeth every day. After my mini poodle's walk, we always wash his face, especially around his eyes. This is a great time to trim the hair around their eyes or around the mouth.  Grooming your dog's facial hair will also help them from getting dark circles around their eyes and retain the optimal color of their fur.

Paw booties - If you're lucky you and your dog are not too fussy you'll be able to have them wear paw boots during their winter walks. These are super helpful, you won't have to wash their paws after the walk. Make sure to hang them to dry for your next dog walk.

Wear sweaters - Generally keeping your dog's hair short during winter will keep him most neat, but a little cold sometimes. Ensure to have extra sweaters for indoor and outdoor.  We have lighter ones for indoor and heavy thicker jackets like sweaters for outdoor since it can very very cold in Canada.

Dog a little timid of winter?  Try to enjoy the winter outdoors - it will help your dog be excited about going out as well. If your dog is trust-worthy, off-lease your dog in a safe area full of snow and let them get familiar with the snow. They will soon learn to enjoy it. My mini poodle doesn't like being cold, he comes to me insisting I put on his sweaters, but he loves running leash-free in the snow. It's awesome!

With a little bit of routine, your dog will come to enjoy the extra attention and you will have a much cleaner home.

Stay safe this winter!

Happy Holidays!
